Crowning Aegon's High Hill above King's Landing, the Red Keep is the seat of the Iron Throne and the residence of the kings of the Seven Kingdoms. Aegon the Conqueror began it in pale red stone, and Maegor the Cruel finished it, then put every mason and builder to the sword, that none but he should know its secret passages.
The Iron Throne
In the cavernous throne room stands the Iron Throne, hammered from the swords of the Conqueror's defeated foes and cooled, the singers say, in dragon's breath. Its barbs and jagged edges spare no king who sits it carelessly.
Halls and Dungeons
Within the curtain walls rise Maegor's Holdfast, a castle within the castle ringed by a dry moat of iron spikes, and the Maidenvault, where Baelor the Blessed shut away his sisters. Below lie four levels of dungeons, the deepest of them the lightless black cells reserved for the realm's most dangerous prisoners.
